This line

Use 7–8 wraps for 10 lb line, fewer for heavier line, down to about 3 for 40 lb. The wraps go around both the standing line and the tag.

Avoid when

Cinching the wraps before they slide. A barrel left up the standing line will not lock the hook.

The drawing follows this tying order. Pause, step, or scrub to stay with the words. The standing line runs to the reel. The tag is the short end you trim. Skin-hook means the point lies flat in the plastic, not out where grass can grab it.

  1. Step 1

Pass 8–10 inches of tag through the hook eye. Let the lure hang or pinch the hook. Lay the tag over your index finger to hold a loop beside the standing line.

  2. Step 2

Wrap the tag around both the standing line and the tag (the doubled line), working down toward the eye. Use 7–8 wraps for 10 lb line, fewer for heavier line, down to about 3 for 40 lb.

  3. Step 3

Pass the tag between the two lines just above the eye, below the last wrap.

  4. Step 4

Then pass the tag back through the loop held by your finger, the loop parallel to the standing line. Remove your finger.

  5. Step 5

Wet the knot. Pull the tag to gather the wraps into a neat spiral with no crossed turns, slide the knot to the eye, pull the standing line hard, and trim.

Common mistakes

  • Tightening the coils in place, so they cannot slide to the eye.
  • Skipping the second pass through the big loop.
