A bowline tied around its own standing part so the loop slides and chokes. Used to recover a lost rod or to noose a piling. It is meant to close, unlike a fixed bowline.

Running Bowline

1 / 5Frame 100 / 100

The drawing follows this tying order. Pause, step, or scrub to stay with the words. The standing line runs to the reel. The tag is the short end you trim. Skin-hook means the point lies flat in the plastic, not out where grass can grab it.

  1. Step 1

Form a bowline in the tag end.

  2. Step 2

Pass the standing part through that bowline's loop.

  3. Step 3

The bowline now runs on the standing part.

  4. Step 4

Pull the standing part to see it slide.

  5. Step 5

It is a noose. Do not use it where you need a fixed loop.

Common mistakes

  • Dressing it so the bowline cannot slide.
  • Using it around a person's wrist.

Used on

This knot is for hard baits more than a soft-plastic rig.
