Loop-to-Loop Connection

How two finished loops are linked: one loop through the other, then the leader end through its own loop. The seated link looks like a square.

This line

A braid loop to a fluoro loop works if both loops were tied to hold. Do not link a slipped overhand.

Avoid when

Passing both loops through each other the wrong way so the link capsizes into a girth hitch you did not want.

The drawing follows this tying order. Pause, step, or scrub to stay with the words. The standing line runs to the reel. The tag is the short end you trim. Skin-hook means the point lies flat in the plastic, not out where grass can grab it.

  1. Step 1

Hold the two loops. One is the fly-line or leader loop, the other is the tippet loop.

  2. Step 2

Pass the tippet loop through the leader loop.

  3. Step 3

Pass the rest of the tippet through the tippet loop.

  4. Step 4

Pull the standing lines so the loops draw into a square link.

  5. Step 5

Seat the link. The two loops should bear on each other evenly.

Common mistakes

  • Pulling before the end has gone through its own loop, which just slips apart.
  • Twisting the link so it cocks in the guides.
