A full-strength start on the spool. The line goes around the arbor several times, then half hitches lock the standing line, and the knot is pulled down to the spool.

This line

Braid still needs those half hitches snug. A single overhand arbor slips. This is the version with the extra locks.

Avoid when

The plain arbor when you are in a hurry on mono. This one is for line that slipped the simple overhand.

The drawing follows this tying order. Pause, step, or scrub to stay with the words. The standing line runs to the reel. The tag is the short end you trim. Skin-hook means the point lies flat in the plastic, not out where grass can grab it.

  1. Step 1

Take several turns around the spool arbor.

  2. Step 2

Half-hitch the tag around the standing line.

  3. Step 3

    Add a second half hitch.

  4. Step 4

Slide the hitches down to the arbor.

  5. Step 5

    Wind line over the knot.

Common mistakes

  • Half hitches left up the line, not seated on the spool.
  • No line wound over the knot afterward.
