Drop Shot Knot

The drop shot knot is a Palomar knot with a long tag end. After tying the Palomar, pass the tag back through the hook eye from the point side so the hook stands out from the line with the point up, then tie the weight to the end of the tag. Use it on fluorocarbon or mono leaders for drop-shot rigs.

This line

Works, but a short fluoro leader takes the hook and the weight. Tie this knot in the leader.

Avoid when

Trimming the tag after the Palomar, as on a plain Palomar. Then there is nothing to tie the weight to.

The drawing follows this tying order. Pause, step, or scrub to stay with the words. The standing line runs to the reel. The tag is the short end you trim. Skin-hook means the point lies flat in the plastic, not out where grass can grab it.

  1. Step 1

Double the line into a closed loop and leave a long tag.

  2. Step 2

Pass that loop through the hook eye.

  3. Step 3

Tie a loose overhand knot in the doubled line. Do not tighten it yet.

  4. Step 4

Pass the whole hook through the open loop.

  5. Step 5

Wet the line and cinch the Palomar. Leave the tag long.

  6. Step 6

Pass the tag back through the hook eye from the point side so the hook stands out with the point up. Tie the weight to the end of the tag.

Common mistakes

  • Skipping the pass back through the eye, so the hook does not stand with the point up.
  • Cinching dry fluoro fast. The friction weakens the line at the eye.
