This line

This is a tippet knot. Braid to a fly is the wrong job for it.

Avoid when

Saltwater hooks and any line heavy enough that the tiny collar cannot grip.

The drawing follows this tying order. Pause, step, or scrub to stay with the words. The standing line runs to the reel. The tag is the short end you trim. Skin-hook means the point lies flat in the plastic, not out where grass can grab it.

  1. Step 1

Pass the tippet through the eye.

  2. Step 2

Loop the tag once around the standing line.

  3. Step 3

Pass the tag through that loop. Take the tag around once more and pass it between the half hitch and the hook eye.

  4. Step 4

Pull the tag to flip the knot tight against the eye.

  5. Step 5

Trim the tag short. The finished knot is only a couple of diameters wide.

Common mistakes

  • Leaving the loop loose so it slips over the eye.
  • A long tag that ticks the hook point on the cast.
