Clinch Dropper

A clinch tied around the main line so the tag stays long and becomes the dropper. It is not a surgeon's dropper and it is not tied on the hook bend.

Use it for

A clinch tied around the main line so the tag stays long and becomes the dropper. It is not a surgeon's dropper and it is not tied on the hook bend.

This line

Braid droppers slip. Tie this in fluoro or mono tippet.

Avoid when

A dropper you will change all day. A dropper loop or a surgeon's knot dropper is easier to replace.

Clinch Dropper

The drawing follows this tying order. Pause, step, or scrub to stay with the words. The standing line runs to the reel. The tag is the short end you trim. Skin-hook means the point lies flat in the plastic, not out where grass can grab it.

  1. Step 1

Lay the dropper strand beside the main line.

  2. Step 2

Wrap the tag back toward the cross.

  3. Step 3

Pass the tag through the small loop.

  4. Step 4

Wet and cinch the wraps onto the main line.

  5. Step 5

Leave the tag long. That is the dropper.

Common mistakes

  • Trimming the tag. That tag is the dropper.
  • Tying it through the hook eye, which is just a second fly on the same tippet.
