Carrick Bend
A symmetric basket bend for two large ropes. Dressed flat, then it capsizes into its working form when you pull it. Used to join heavy dock lines.

Carrick Bend


Step 1
Lay the first rope in an open loop.

Step 2
Weave the second rope over and under.

Step 3
Finish the basket so it is flat.

Step 4
Pull the standing parts so it capsizes.

Step 5
Dress the capsized bend.
The drawing follows this tying order. Pause, step, or scrub to stay with the words. The standing line runs to the reel. The tag is the short end you trim. Skin-hook means the point lies flat in the plastic, not out where grass can grab it.
Common mistakes
- Pulling it before it is dressed flat, so it jams crooked.
- Leaving it undressed in the basket form under load.
